Frequently Asked Questions

Is Paul Dooley a real therapist?

Yes. I am licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. My license number is MFC# 92603.

Why work with me?

I do believe that I am a competent therapist. I have the education, skills, and training to help guide people through difficult situations. Yet, that’s not the only reason why you should consider working with me. I think just as important as being competent is the fact that I flat out care about people. Empathy, compassion, and creating a safe environment are all important elements to my style of counseling.

How much do you charge?

Free Consultation: $0
Individual Session: $65
Extended Session: $85

No. Currently I do not accept any form of insurance. However, I can provide you with a super bill (invoice) that you can submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement less your deductible.

Who is eligible for counseling services?

I work with adults and children over the age of 13.

Will anyone be told that I saw you?

No. Your records are confidential. I do not share records unless mandated by court order or upon your request. I will not communicate with your insurance company or any other entity about your treatment.

Is what I say in session confidential?

Yes. What you tell me is confidential and will not be shared with anyone. There are only two exceptions to this rule. If you tell me that you want to hurt yourself or another person the law mandates that I break confidentiality and get you the help you need.

What happens before my first session?

I will send you an email with a special link. This link will take you to a secure webpage where you will be asked to complete intake forms. You will be able to complete and sign all of your intake forms online. Your records will be stored in a HIPPA compliant environment with bank level encryption.

What can I expect at my first visit to you?

We will discuss your current problem(s), explore antecedent events to your current problem(s), and create a custom treatment plan to address
those specific problems.

How long are sessions?

Free Consultation: 25 min
Initial Assessment: 90 min
Individual Session: 50 min
Family Session: 50 min

When are you available?

I am currently available for in person and online appointments on Saturdays between 9am-3pm.

Do you need counseling or psychotherapy?

Generally counseling is short-term and meant to address a specific/current problem. Whereas psychotherapy usually addresses long-standing problems and occurs over a longer period of time.

What does LMFT stand for?

It stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, I am also able to use the designation of psychotherapist. In short, I am a therapist that can work with individuals, families, and groups.

Do you work with couples and families?

I am available for family therapy sessions. Unfortunately, I do not provide couples therapy.

Isn’t it better for me to solve my own problems?

You certainly could. The benefit of having a counselor however is being provided with a safe and private place to receive support and guidance.

If I go to you for help, does it mean there is something wrong with me?

Absolutely not. Counseling can help people manage issues such as anxiety and depression. But it can also help with common life adjustments such as moving, changing jobs, or experiencing a difficult breakup.

How often will we meet?

It depends on your needs. We could meet once a week or once per month. We can always adjust the number and frequency of visits.

How long does it take to see results?

There is no set timetable. It will depend on issues such as the nature of your current problem(s), frequency of visits, your level of participation, etc. That said, I always strive to be solution focused and time limited.
